About This Work

Commissioned by Artbank

The Popular Front is a clock designed to measure the afterlife of internet memes. Produced in 2011, the work re-inscribes Dylan’s iconic placards with the names of the most circulated memes of the time. As our temporal distance from 2011 increases, this project registers the rate at which memes decay from collective memory, indexing them against the enduring viral currency of the Dylan footage.

The Popular Front is part of The Lessons, a series of short video works where archival history is folded into new constellations, producing virtual proximities between disparate temporal moments.

Materials: Don’t Look Back (1967).
